Meet Laura
The hands and heart behind Old Truck Leather
My mom taught me to draft patterns and sew at a young age. We’d sit together with our sewing machines humming – she would make clothes, while I made quilts. Some nights we could barely find the dining room table under all of the fabric scraps! Even though cancer took her over 10 years ago, I remember those days fondly.
My dad was a jack-of-all-trades guy who loved working with wood, metal and restoring cars. Shortly before cancer took him, he developed an interest in leather working. We’d sit together on the couch looking at patterns of leather pouches he’d like to create. He had a keen ability to see how materials “layer” and know how things were built. Sadly, he was never able to construct anything from leather.
Honoring the hard work and skill I saw in my parents, I decided to blend sewing and leather working. Old Truck Leather Co. was created to develop quality, sustainable leather goods that enhance everyday life. I receive tremendous support from my husband and kids as we venture down this road together. Without the support of my family, this dream would never be possible.
The mission of Old Truck Leather Co. is to support families. A portion of all sales is donated to Clara’s Hope, a local organization in Fenton, Mi that supports children and families in foster care and adoption.
Step-by-Step Care Instructions
Keep your bags, wallets, and totes in top condition
Handmade leather bags, wallets, and totes are more than just accessories – they’re investments that get better with age when cared for properly. While leather is naturally durable, it benefits from a little attention to stay soft, supple, and looking its best. With a few simple habits, you can keep your Old Truck Leather goods in excellent condition for years to come.
-
Clean thoroughly
Using a soft cloth with a gentle cleaner, remove visible dirt and grime. -
Condition regularly
Moisturize using a natural balm sparingly with a soft cloth, buffing gently to maintain suppleness. Test first, as oils will temporarily darken the leather. We love Smith’s All Natural Leather Balm (available from Amazon) as it rarely changes the color of the leather. -
Store safely
It is best to keep your leather away from direct sunlight and heat when not in use. -
Avoid water and salt exposure
Salt water draws moisture from leather and can tarnish hardware. If exposed, clean the leather promptly and allow it to dry naturally before conditioning. -
Aging gracefully
Marks and scratches are an inherent part of the aging process. The patina tells your leather's story and deepens its character over time. -
Suede Care
Suede pieces have been treated with a suede protection spray, which should be reapplied periodically to help repel water and dirt.
